Harmony, Clash & Special Relationships

Five types of special interactions between Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches

In Saju, when Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches meet, they trigger special energy reactions. These are called Hap (Harmony), Chung (Clash), Hyeong (Punishment), Pa (Break), and Hae (Harm) — the core elements that create dynamism in a Saju chart. ● Hap (Harmony): Two characters attract each other and create new energy. Union, bonding, destined connection. - Stem Harmonies: Gap-Gi combine into Earth, Eul-Gyeong into Metal, Byeong-Sin into Water, Jeong-Im into Wood, Mu-Gye into Fire - Branch Triple Harmonies: In-O-Sul (Fire frame), Sin-Ja-Jin (Water frame), Hae-Myo-Mi (Wood frame), Sa-Yu-Chuk (Metal frame) - Branch Six Harmonies: Ja-Chuk, In-Hae, Myo-Sul, Jin-Yu, Sa-Sin, O-Mi ● Chung (Clash): Two characters collide head-on, breaking the existing order. Change, movement, conflict. - Examples: Ja-O clash, Chuk-Mi clash, In-Sin clash, Myo-Yu clash, etc. ● Hyeong (Punishment): An indirect twisting or tangling of energy. Trials, legal matters, health concerns. ● Pa (Break): A gradual cracking or crumbling of a relationship. Progressive change, weakening. ● Hae (Harm): A relationship that looks fine on the surface but secretly undermines. Jealousy, rivalry, inner conflict. These special relationships exist within the natal chart (Wonguk) itself, and also arise when Major Luck Cycles or Annual Fortune interact with the natal chart. The periods when these relationships activate become the critical "timing inflection points" of life. To illustrate how these relationships manifest in real life, consider concrete examples. A person whose natal chart contains the In-O-Sul Triple Harmony has exceptionally strong Fire energy, exhibiting passion, powerful drive, and notable leadership that draws people in. Conversely, someone with a Ja-O clash in their natal chart carries a polarity of inner conflict, frequently displaying a life pattern of constant change rather than settling into stability. Punishment (Hyeong) is a more covert and complex relationship than clash. Representative Triple Punishments include In-Sa-Sin (the Punishment of Ingratitude) and Chuk-Sul-Mi (the Punishment of Power). The Punishment of Ingratitude hints at betrayal and trust issues in human relationships, while the Punishment of Power represents conflict in professional and social settings. When Punishment is activated by a Major Luck Cycle or Annual Fortune, it can signal a period requiring extra attention to health issues or legal disputes. A critical perspective on these special relationships is that they do not operate in isolation — they influence each other. For example, if a natal chart contains a Ja-Chuk Harmony but the Annual Fortune brings O (Horse), a Ja-O clash occurs that can break the existing harmony, potentially disrupting a previously stable relationship or environment. This is called "breaking a harmony with a clash" (Chungpahap). Conversely, when a harmony enters through a Major Luck Cycle to meet an existing natal clash, the tension of that clash may be eased. DESTIGER automatically detects every Harmony, Clash, Punishment, Break, and Harm relationship within the natal chart and comprehensively analyzes the additional reactions created when the current Major Luck Cycle and Annual Fortune interact with the natal chart. It clearly marks the timing when harmonies are broken, clashes are activated, and punishments are triggered, guiding users to recognize and prepare for the major inflection points of their lives in advance.
